Are Facelift Results Permanent?

Choosing Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Yarish – who has over 30 years of experience and provides patients with his own, on-site surgical center that can even accommodate overnight stays – can help to provide you with great results at “turning back the hand of time” on your face. Through his decades of practice, Dr. Yarish has perfected the union of function meets form and combines his technical know-how with his aesthetic eye to give his patients results that look natural.

Among the questions he typically receives during facelift consultations, is whether or not the results will be permanent. While plastic surgery can give your face long-lasting results that may last up to a decade, the aging process won’t stop. Therefore, while surgery will make you look younger or good for your age, you may develop additional facial sagging, wrinkling, and deepening lines over the years. As a result, some patients opt to have a second procedure performed several years after their first one in order to maintain a more youthful appearance.

Factors That Can Negate Facelift Results

While time will inevitably cause your face to age, there are other known factors that can shorten the length of time that results will be obvious. It’s good to be informed about these factors, as knowing about them can help you prevent certain habits that can negate your results.

Factors that can make facelift results fade away include:

  • Genetics
While in this day and age, there’s nothing that can be done about your genetic makeup (yet), it’s important for Houston patients considering facial surgery to know that genetics may make your results more short-lived. While everyone and every family is different, if you had someone in your family who had the procedure done but didn’t achieve long-lasting results, it could be an indicator that you’ll experience the same results.
  • Sun exposure
We’ve all been told by our dermatologists and even general practitioners that we should wear sunscreen every day, including on our face. If you’ve never practiced this recommendation before, perhaps getting a facelift will change your mind. Houston residents who have increased exposure to the sun are likely to age more quickly, and thus, lose the results from their surgery faster.
  • Smoking
We’ve all heard the Surgeon General’s warning that smoking can cause lung cancer. But this habit can also cause your face to age faster, too. While Dr. Yarish requires his patients to be smoke-free for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after their surgeries to prevent complications, some pick the habit back up after they’ve recovered. Doing so not only causes the well-known health risks like cancer, emphysema, and COPD but it also increases aging, too.
  • Alcohol or Drug Abuse
Addiction is a terrible disease that unfortunately affects too many Houston residents. One of the lesser-known complications of excessive alcohol and/or drug use is that it can speed up the aging process. If you’re experiencing addiction, your facial appearance isn’t your first concern. If you are considering a facelift but have a problem with alcohol or drugs, be open and honest with Dr. Yarish so he can refer you to a treatment program for overall wellness. As one of your health care providers, he’s concerned not only with your aesthetics, but your total health as well.
