What Are the Top Plastic Surgery Options for Men?

October 13, 2023 | 5 minute read

When you think about plastic surgery, you may focus on how it benefits women. And while women make up the vast majority of cosmetic surgery patients, that doesn’t mean men can’t explore numerous ways to improve themselves as well.

The good news is that the stigma around men and plastic surgery is fading, and more men are deciding to invest in their bodies via plastic surgery.

Below, we explore some of the most requested plastic surgery procedures for men

  1. Gynecomastia Surgery

Also known as male breasts, gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance in your testosterone and estrogen hormones, which increases the amount of breast gland tissues in boys or men. Newborns, boys going through puberty, and older men may develop gynecomastia as a result of normal changes in hormone levels, though other causes also exist.

Generally, gynecomastia is not a serious problem; however, it can be difficult to cope with. Men and boys may have pain associated with gynecomastia,\ and it can even be asymmetric.

While gynecomastia can occur at any age, it is more common in teenage boys and men over 50. In fact, an estimated 24 to 65% of males between the ages of 50 and 80 suffer from this condition.

As men age, they produce less testosterone and may have more body fat. Excess body fat stimulates estrogen production, which can increase the growth of breast tissue.

Other causes include:

  • Health conditions
  • Certain medications
  • The use of anabolic steroids
  • Idiopathic (no cause identified)

In some cases, gynecomastia goes away on its own (commonly seen in adolescent men), but if it doesn’t, it can have a debilitating effect on self-confidence.

Gynecomastia surgery is the number one procedure most requested by men, with over 21,000 undergoing mammaplasty (male breast reduction) in 2022. Gynecomastia surgery eliminates excess fat and tissue and restores a more masculine contour to your chest.

Depending on your needs, techniques used to reduce male breasts include:

Liposuction Male Breast Reduction

Liposuction is used if your gynecomastia results from excess pockets of fat. A small incision on each side of your chest allows the liposuction tool to remove fat and glandular tissue while sculpting your chest.

Excision-Based Male Breast Reduction

In some more severe cases, it is necessary to remove the excess skin and tissue to reduce the breast size. This method is typically used along with liposuction for optimal results.

  1. Liposuction

You may think men aren’t as self-conscious as women about their bellies and other areas with stubborn excess fat, but that isn’t true. In reality, both liposuction and tummy tucks are among the top five most requested plastic surgery procedures for men.

You may be comfortable with your dad bod, but if you’re not, liposuction can eliminate what hours at the gym and a healthy diet can’t seem to fix. Liposuction is most commonly performed on the abdomen, flanks, arms, and thighs, but it’s an effective tool for smoothing unsightly lumps nearly anywhere on your body.

Liposuction isn’t a weight loss method but a tool for contouring. If you are within a few pounds of your ideal weight but still fighting those pesky pockets of fat, you can put the finishing touches on your physique with liposuction.

  1. Eyelid Lift

One of the first things many people notice about you is your eyes, especially now when so many people are on multiple video calls daily. If you’ve spent hours staring at your reflection on the screen, you may notice that your eyelids are drooping and you look exhausted. This might simply be because it’s been a long day, but it could also be because your eyelids age (and sag) along with the rest of your body.

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your body, making it much more susceptible to damage. As you age, the skin on and around your eyes (including your eyelids) begins to lose elasticity, and the muscles that support your eyelids also start to weaken. The result is excess skin that droops over your upper lid and sags from your lower lid.

Blepharoplasty lifts and rejuvenates the skin and soft tissues around your eyes, leaving you looking rested and refreshed. An eyelid lift is designed to remove and reposition sagging skin and excess fat around your eyes, tightening the skin and eliminating puffy under-eye bags.
